On September 11, 2017, Hurricane Irma struck Florida and passed directly over the Orlando area. Orbit One Resort sustained damage to the fencing, landscaping, and other common area amenities. The high winds and rain caused a large amount of destruction, and there was water intrusion through the roofs, the windows, and the solarium-style windows on all of the buildings. In total, more than 80% of the suites had water intrusion. Though not immediately evident, the water caused damage to ceilings, drywall, baseboards, carpet, and window treatments. The exteriors of the buildings also sustained damage, including peeling and blistering of the exterior coatings. The resort has been closed since the hurricane struck, as the majority of suites need major restoration work, and all of the remaining solarium window boxes must be removed. These solarium windows have been reengineered for a more robust support structure and an improved water-diverting flashing system that will be less vulnerable to hurricane-force winds.

June 2018:
At this time, repairs are in progress for both the Apollo and Gemini Buildings. Damaged ceilings, drywall and baseboards are being replaced and every suite will be painted. In many suites, cabinetry had to be removed in order to address water damage to the drywall behind it. Carpet and padding is being removed and replaced in every suite. The resort team is taking this as an the opportunity to make other improvements to furnishings while the suites are being repaired. Many of the tables and chairs will be repainted, steam-cleaned, or reupholstered, and the kitchen countertops will be resurfaced. On the outside, the solarium window boxes are being removed and replaced as described above, and both buildings will be resealed and repainted, including the metal roofs, all walls, stairways and doors.

The permitting process is underway for the Saturn and Neptune buildings. The scope of work will be nearly identical for these two buildings, and for the remaining Venus and Mercury buildings. The entire restoration project is expected to run through December 2018, and the resort will remain closed during this time in order to escalate the schedule of repairs and to prevent injury to guests during the demolition and rebuilding process. At this time, we are on schedule for our anticipated reopening date of January 2019.
